In this clip from a national address made on Tuesday, Prime Minister Mark Carney explained why trade talks between Canada and the U.S. broke down at the “eleventh hour,” arguing that the U.S. had asked for far too much.
“The most fundamental issue is that the cumulative U.S. demands revealed that they wanted us to become even more reliant on them, not less,” he said.
He also outlined why Ottawa is moving ahead with retaliatory tariffs on a wide range of American goods, which took effect Tuesday.
